15 Years of YouTube: The history of the platform that changed the web

Fifteen years ago, the multimedia content sharing giant was born and today is the second most visited website in the world. Here's how it all started ...

YouTube is the most widely used video-sharing system in the world. Everyone knows that, and many use it daily, and some used it to build a successful career: but how did this idea that revolutionized the internet world come about?

YouTube Creation:
The site was founded on February 14, 2005, by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Javed Karim, who were then employees of PayPal, the online money transfer company, which was founded by others, among them Elon Musk.
The idea, of course, was to create a virtual place where anyone could upload their videos and share them with a community. But there are two different stories of the real motives that led to the development of this ambitious project.

The first story told by Javed Karim, who was also the first YouTube user registered with the username jawed. According to him, the idea of creating a YouTube website was born in 2004, when we realized the difficulty of finding online videos related to two events that were then: The first one is the Indian Ocean tsunami, and the second one is The Super Bowl in which Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson have showcased the protagonists of the episode. This showed the three boys the need to create a shared space where they can download many amateur videos for free, which will start spreading on the web thanks to the latest generation of mobile phones.

The second story according to the other two partners, all started on an evening in which Karim was not present. During the ceremony, the two realized that although many guests had taken pictures and recorded different videos, there is no way to quickly distribute this content between the attendees, and because of this they created YouTube

The rest is clear in history. The idea of creating an extended YouTube platform was so appreciated that in 2006 Google paid for YouTube's entire purchase a whopping $ 1.65 billion!

Here are some stats about YouTube:
- 1.9 billion active YouTube users every month.
- Over a billion hours of video. being watched every day.
- Over 500 hours of video. uploaded and shared every minute.
- YouTube is available in 80 languages in 90 countries around the world.
- More than 10,000 videos with over a billion views.
- Users use YouTube an average of 40 minutes per day.
- More than 60% of users watch YouTube using phones.

The first video on YouTube
The first video was posted to YouTube on April 23, 2015, by Javed Karim, during a visit to the San Diego Zoo while making fun of some elephants because of their very large nose.

Who would have thought that this kind of a joke among friends would have laid the foundations for a video empire, YouTube?
